Service Description
Crisis Respite Services provide short-term care and crisis intervention in the home of a person with developmental disabilities receiving care or services.
The person must be on a Developmental Disabilities waiver and live at home to qualify for services.
This service enables the person to continue living at home when their caregiver is having a temporary crisis by providing the caregiver with needed support and resources.
Crisis Respite Services include in-home short-term care and crisis intervention through agencies licensed by the Department of Human Services.
Crisis Respite Services offer relief and support:
* For the caregiver, and
* To protect the person from harm during the crisis (or to protect other people living with the person).
Crisis Respite services include:
* Assessment of what lead to the crisis.
* Creation of a plan (with the service planning team) to help end the crisis and to keep the person safe.
* Services for both medical and behavioral needs
* Caregiver consultation and training as needed.
Some Adult Foster Care and Child Foster Care homes may be able to provide out-of-home Crisis Respite. The county or waiver worker may be able to help identify foster care homes able to provide out-of-home Crisis Respite.

All of the following are required for Crisis Respite Services:
* There is a crisis in which a caregiver and/or service provider(s) cannot support and protect the person (or others who live with them).
* Other resources for help must not be available - for example, general Respite Care must not be able to assist to end the crisis and prevent further crisis.
* The services will help the person to avoid institutional (out-of-home) placement
* The county must make sure that the services will not end in the person being unable to return home or to a foster home in the community. They must also make sure that the costs are not more than for out-of-home care long term.
Note- People who receive Developmental Disabilities waivers or other waivers may be eligible for general Respite Care, which has fewer criteria (such as not requiring there to be a crisis or a licensed respite provider).
